I didn’t realize Kincaid had stopped talking until the silence became unbearable. I saw that he was staring at me. I lied to myself that I didn’t know what he wanted from me, but he was a man with a one-track mind. He wanted what he always wanted from me: my small piece of land just outside Handsome town limits. This time, he didn’t want it for its real estate value; he wanted it to bury a man.
