There was a romantic loneliness in those miles. He did not hurry. Time was what it was, and once you got past that, it was easy to ignore. A furrowed sky and a well-tempered ground. Each step was clean, every drawn breath made room for the next. There were no distractions apart from a distance that would not change. There was a loneliness in those miles, but also the romance of duty. Home was what it was, and once you got past that, it was hard to forget.
Eloquent and beautiful.
