Presumed dignity

oldwhiteflowers

We suffer these final moments with presumed dignity,

candle sputtering, hands withdrawn, petals pressed

in the back of crossword books we never finished. One reaches

for the other, shivering fingers upon a

a shiny vinyl tablecloth. Remember when,

and you don’t.

The solemn and prolonged

lacing of fingers, the last great memory.
